Prysmian partners with GCCIA to modernize Middle East grids
Prysmian, in collaboration with the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA), is advancing sustainable innovation in Middle East power grids through the adoption of its patented E3X coated overhead conductors.
The milestone marks a significant step forward in improving energy efficiency, reducing transmission losses and lowering carbon emissions across the region.
The E3X coated conductor has been deployed in a section of the GCCIA 280/2022 Project, a 400 kV overhead transmission line connecting Al Zour in Kuwait to Al Fadhili in Saudi Arabia. The conductor is engineered to operate at lower temperatures while increasing transmission capacity by up to 20%, depending on weather conditions.
Real-time monitoring to enhance performance
In addition to supplying the advanced conductor solution, Prysmian will integrate real-time monitoring technologies to assess the performance of overhead conductors, whether coated or uncoated.
These monitoring systems will enable GCCIA to make data-driven decisions, optimizing efficiency and reliability in future power infrastructure projects across the Gulf.
Cinzia Farisè, EVP Power Grid at Prysmian, stated:
“Prysmian is at the forefront of supporting the transformation of power grids, ensuring transmission and distribution operators worldwide have access to smarter, more efficient, reliable and sustainable solutions. This collaboration with GCCIA reflects our commitment to building a greener and more resilient energy future in the Middle East.”
A decade of field-tested innovation
E3X technology has demonstrated nearly a decade of proven performance, initially gaining traction in the United States before expanding nationwide. The integration of monitoring solutions represents a further step in transmission line innovation, allowing utilities to verify and optimize conductor performance in real time.
Sathish Kumar Ranganathan, VP R&D Power Grid & Materials at Prysmian, added:
“With the integration of real-time monitoring solutions, E3X technology is redefining innovation for overhead conductors. This, together with Prysmian’s holistic approach, confirms our leadership as a solution provider in the power grid sector.”
The collaboration between Prysmian and GCCIA sets a new benchmark for energy transmission solutions aimed at improving efficiency in the Middle East, reinforcing both organizations’ commitment to sustainability and technological progress.
